埃塞克斯之蛇英文观后感



    I just finished the show The Essex Serpent and I think it is a great story which is good for knowing a period of history. If you are not watch it yet, let me tell the story to you and there will be some analysis by myself.



    It happened in Essex, a small city at south-east of Britain in Victorian era which medical science has just appeared not too long. Core Seaborne is just lost her husband who is always hurt her and “restore” her like the vase sent by him, that was broken and restore with gold. He is a naturalist that is why he refused the Doctor Luke Garrett’s advice to have an operation he intend to leave the world as he entered it. Through news on a newspaper, Core decided to find the mysterious serpent in Essex with her servant also her friend Martha and her son Frankie.



    In Essex, a girl walked into the sea with handing a cross to pray for God to forgive her sin, then the wind blows the waves to take her life or in local people’s words she was eat by the serpent and God won’t forgive her. Her little sister ran away when the girl meet the serpent and rumor comes again. We all know that the serpent is the one who tempted Eve to eat the apple in Bible and it is the devil pretended. Everyone believes it in Essex. Core went to Essex from London to find the serpent with her science, of course she does not believe the serpent is the devil.



    The first line of this story: the conflict between science and theology. Science is still a child even it got evidence although it always becomes a sign of theology, and theology is like an old but authorized person it has accepted widely.



    There is the most obvious main line. Core was accidentally became to the sign and local people thought it was she who bring the bad luck, even thought she is the devil when she was going to find the serpent and tried to teach children geography. Will Ransome, a local vicar who has a lot of knowledge and has a happy family, wants to help Core to find out the truth about the serpent even he know it is myth. In that way they both seems love each other but one gets a happy family, and one is confused about her position and loved by Luke, the doctor I have mentioned above. It is truly like the temptation by the serpent in theology and it is unreasonable in science.



    Everyone are wondering whether the serpent exist? In theology, the serpent does exist even they find a dead whale in the end. The serpent killed the girl who go into the sea, killed the old man live beside the sea and broke the web when people go fishing on the sea. They used a lot of methods to prevent themselves, it is they always do and they can not accept or understand the new things. In science, the serpent does not exist at all. It is fear in our mind and dream. All the signs in theology is just a coincidence. Joe, one of Will’s children, was shocked to lose her ability of speak by the serpent and Doctor Garrett use hypnotherapy to cure her. It is worked but Will was angry with him. The serpent is in people’s dreams that comes several times in the show.



    The second line of this story is the development of medicine. Luke Garrett as a doctor who has great contribution to medicine, especially clinical medicine. He cure a patient who was called “perfect patient” with treat by cutting his heart in the era which most people are naturalists like Core’s husband. Luke successfully done that cutting-heart operate and he, of course, is the first person to do that. He won medals and praises from the medical community. At the end of story, he is made head of the medical school to teach people the secrets of the heart. It is worth to mentioning that an operate should be in public like a show to let other doctors and students watch and it is a rule in that time. When I was playing the phone game called Shenyi, it shows that an operate is like a show should be watch by other people and there is almost no concept of disinfection. People are widely accepted the theory and methods such as Humorism, amputation, bleed even alchemy.



    The third line is about the development of socialism which is called troublemakers by people in that era. Martha, a friend of Core, is a socialist and she always try to change the unfair treatment in this society. George Spencer, assistant of Luke, also is interested in socialism and try to help Martha to make their best to change the society. Unfortunately, the bill was failed which Martha write to upper class through George. Martha and George visited the slum which the “perfect patient” and his wife, Sally, living in. They live on making matchboxes and gunpowder. The water they drink was poison and they have nothing to do with it. Even the upper class really see that, they still do not want to change it so it still has a long way to go.



    Still, there is a line about every character in the story that is about the Essex serpent. When we talk about it, we are not talking about the Bible serpent, we are talking about the fear or the faith. Characters all had a change or more like regeneration after they meet “the serpent”.



    Core was hurt by her dead husband that is her fear. She has the faith to science and she try to find evidence first then she believe the truth. But when the local people thought she was the devil, she could not understand why they have such blind faith, even Will who she loved is also do not believe science. The most strongest feeling is she leave Essex to London and she found she was truly love Will but it can not happen until Will’s wife dead. In the end, she was devoted herself to the search for fossils and has an happy ending with Will.



    Will as a vicar in Essex, obviously he has faith to God even he has read lots of books. When Luke try to cure his daughter, he was angry about it that can show he is also doubt with science. When he see fossils in museum, he was definitely shocked and it is the time he ask God is the faith truly real, is the Bible real or lies. That kind of doubt is his serpent.



    The failed try is the serpent to Martha, when she wrote a letter and a bill even invited upper class to visit slum, they still can not accept Martha’s advice. And when George have plans to her, she rejuvenate to keep going on.



    Refusing his love by Core, Luke was disheartened. On his way to home, his hand was hurt by a robber and he can not hold his scalpel. Luke was full of fear and sadness, he loved Core and his profession so much but now he has nothing. Fortunately, he found his love and became head of the medical school.



    Frankie as Core’s son is a weird character in the story. He is a little boy favorite in Sherlock Holmes and natural science. Maybe he is the epitome of London people’s characteristics at that time. He is indifferent about around. When his father was dead, he feel nothing. When people in Essex was dead, he feel nothing. When his new friend, an old man, was dead, he feel nothing even talk to him and see his death. At first he went to Essex, he said he hate fresh air in here. In the end, he make a new friend in Essex and help him to feed goats. Although he is changed, he is still a weird child.



    The conflict between science and theology is not only shows on a group of people like Core and the local people, but also shows on big city like London and small city like Essex. The development of big cities are always more rational and indifferent and in the contrary small cities or villages are more enthusiasm and obstinacy. It also shows the impact of the revolution on society.
