Reviews by participants (just a simplified note, not exactly what they meant)
Again welcome to our cozy movies party. This is the 14th edition of our event and also the first bilingual event. I recommend this movie for a specific reason- it beautifully demonstrates how to help children who have experienced loss to healing. The film also evoked many positive emotions in me, from the breathtaking natural scenery to the exhilarating flight scenes, the bond between the geese and Amy, the connection between the father and daughter, and the kindness of Susan, the girlfriend of the father. I really love this movie.
This is my first time attending this movie event, and it was unexpected as I initially came just for the food. However, I found the environmental theme of the movie quite interesting. The plot seemed a bit slow at first, but it became more intense after the appearance of the "antagonist" police officer. In his own way, the officer was just fulfilling his duty to protect the birds, even though his methods were different. The scene where he prepared to clip the geese's wings really touched me as it showed how he saw it as just a routine task.
I'm also a first-time participant, and I feel this movie is about environmental protection, love, and the relationship between animals and humans. I hope to participate in the next event, preferably one that's bilingual like this.
It's hard to believe this movie is from 1996, as the lightweight aircraft looks highly advanced even by today's standards. I recently saw similar aircraft during the Dragon Boat Festival at the Oriental Gate; the audience was amazed by them. So, this movie can be considered a high-tech movie haha! Their efforts to protect the natural migration of the 18 geese, flying over Lake Ontario and a military base, and the contrast with the investors trying to develop the bird's habitat, reminded me of the changes during the pandemic when humans stayed home, allowing nature to recover. It's not just an environmental film but also about growth and encouragement, with Amy's family providing strong support throughout.
I might have a different perspective. I really admire this group of people coming together for such a journey. If I could have such an experience in my lifetime, I'd feel extremely fulfilled. To me, it's a story about life, love, and personal growth. In the end, when Amy can fly with the geese on her own, it makes you feel like you've lived and left your mark on the world. It's something precious. It's not about achieving high ranks, great jobs, or earning lots of money; it's about doing something as they did in the movie, and that's what I envy the most. When the father dislocated his shoulder and let Amy fly on her own, Amy felt lost and said, "If only Mom were here." Her father earnestly told her, "Mom has always been here, in the wind, in the geese, and in you." While taking care of the geese, Amy is a motherly role, which was a significant experience and healing for her.
Amy's parents are both interesting and have their pursuits, making them a great trio (it's a pity about the mother's accident). Although the plan to lead the geese south was mainly the father's idea, and with the help of his uncle, it was the mother's influence that shaped Amy's character, the true protagonist who led the geese. So, I believe the mother was crucial. Amy's success and the family's support are interconnected. One thing that struck me was that sometimes we don't necessarily need to do something meaningful; wanting to do it is enough, just like how they genuinely wanted to take care of the geese. We often talk about finding the meaning of life and living a meaningful life, even when raising children, we want them to have meaningful lives. However, perhaps we don't need to actively seek meaning; being happy doing what we want can be fulfilling enough.
For me, this is a simple and easily understandable movie. It's about grief, loss, and tragedy. A wounded little girl wakes up to find her mother gone and has to return to Canada to live with her father whom she hasn't seen in years. I also have some thoughts about the relationship between animals and humans. In Canada, only hunters can have guns, whereas, in the United States, everyone can. Even in the US, sometimes hunting licenses are issued to control animal populations, like using wolves to control deer populations. However, hunters make full use of the hunted animals and leave nothing to waste. In places with beautiful natural scenery like Alaska, bears look for food and might attack humans to steal their food. The bond, called imprinting, between the geese and Amy is also fascinating, almost magical. Perhaps humans also have that special connection with those they meet early in life.
I have to go now! But I really enjoyed this movie, even more than "Stand by Me"!
